A grande obra (The great work) is a scenographic-like installation of a workspace -- a desk withstanding various objects and materials, such as basalt, iron, copper, bottles containing volcanic sand, different kinds of oils, various vessels made out of metal and glass, some of which are lab material, and eggs in diverse stages of transmutation; an empty chair, and a stool withstanding a plant vase. The activity performed here is not completely clear to the viewer, but it does suggest some kind of mystical and/or magical practice.

This project began as a selfless research on the aims and practices of alchemists but ended up focusing on the worldview according to which natural materials and processes were magically charged, undergoing forces of transformation beyond human comprehension. My keen interest is precisely this possibility of looking back at processes and phenomena as mysterious and unimaginable, oppositely to the science-based approach according to which every process is nothing but a product of rationally framed and understandable laws.

Alongside the workspace installation, I have created a series of videos, Opus I — V, that portray several practices regarding the transmutation of common materials, such as water, egg shells, iron, baking soda, and others. These videos echo similarities with the objects found on the desk, but they do not exactly match. Here, the videos simply bring these practices, loosely inspired by ancient-rooted magical and alchemical practices, into the present moment. They make them visible and real, as there is no effect, no artifice, no device deceiving the viewer in any way. They show the process as it is, in all its inexplicable beauty and wonder.
